Welcome to SSN24! In today’s update, we bring you a gripping story from the Paris Olympics where the men’s 5,000-meter heats witnessed unexpected drama.
Great Britain runner George Mills has been reinstated in the men's 5,000-meter final after a dramatic fall during the qualifying heat. Mills, the son of former Premier League soccer player Danny Mills, was one of five runners who fell during the final lap of the first heat on Wednesday. The chaos began when Canada's Mohammed Ahmed tumbled on his own, finishing 16th. Despite appealing and claiming French runner Hugo Hay had clipped him, Ahmed will not advance to the final.
As the runners approached the home stretch, a chain reaction caused by Mills getting tangled up with Hay led to four others toppling over. This included Spain's Thierry Ndikumwenayo, Team Refugee’s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu, and the Netherlands' Mike Foppen. Initially, these four runners did not qualify for the final, missing out on the top eight. However, the referee later decided to advance them to the final. Hugo Hay, who automatically advanced as the seventh-place finisher, was confronted by Mills after the race, leading to a heated exchange of words.
The 5,000-meter final, now set to feature 20 athletes, promises to be more intense and competitive. Among the competitors will be two-time reigning world champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, who achieved the fastest time in both qualifying heats. Ingebrigtsen is looking to redeem himself after narrowly missing the podium in the 1,500-meter final, a race in which he won gold in Tokyo.
Team USA will be represented by Grant Fisher, the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter U.S. champion, along with Graham Blanks, who finished sixth in the first heat, managing to avoid the chaos caused by the fall.
