Day 49 in Honningsvag, Norway, May 23, 2025

Day 49 in Honningsvag, Norway, May 23, 2025. Honningsvåg is the northernmost city/town in mainland Norway. It is located in Nordkapp Municipality in Finnmark County. Honningsvåg was declared a city in 1996, despite its small population. The 1.04-square-kilometre (260-acre) town has a population of 2,245 (2023), which gives the town a population density of 2,159 inhabitants per square kilometer (5,590/sq mi). Honningsvåg is situated at a bay on the southeastern side of the large island of Magerøya, while the famous North Cape and its visitor center are on the northern side of the island. Honningsvåg is a port of call for Hurtigruten Coastal Express and cruise ships, especially in the summer months. The ice-free ocean (the southwestern part of the Barents Sea) provides rich fisheries, and tourism is also important to the town. Even at 71°N, many private gardens in Honningsvåg have trees, although rarely more than 3 to 4 meters (9.8 to 13.1 ft) tall. The famous dog Bamse, which became the mascot of the Free Norwegian Forces during the Second World War, came from Honningsvåg. The steep cliff of the North Cape is located at 71°10′21″N 25°47′04″E, about 2,102.3 km (1,306.3 mi) from the North Pole. Nordkapp is often inaccurately referred to as the northernmost point of Europe. However, the neighboring Knivskjellodden Cape extends 1,450 m (4,760 ft) further north. Furthermore, both of these points are situated on an island (Magerøya), albeit one connected by road to the mainland. The northernmost point of mainland Europe is located at Cape Nordkinn (Kinnarodden), which lies about 5.7 km (3.5 mi) further south and about 70 km (43 mi) to the east.
