Can Serious Photography Survive a Family Holiday?
Can you combine serious photography with a family holiday? I took my Nikon Z8 on a Norwegian fjords cruise to find out. With spectacular landscapes, three stops in Norway and plenty of camera gear, it sounded like the perfect opportunity for some landscape photography, but photographing on a cruise turned out to be very different from going away specifically to make photographs. In this video I look back at the images I made in Skjolden, Olden and Haugesund, including some that worked, plenty that didn’t, and the reasons why. We’ll look at the effect of limited time, poor access to the best light, organised excursions and, perhaps most importantly, the difficulty of switching between being on holiday and being properly focused on photography. This isn’t really a video about whether cruises are good or bad for photographers. It’s about what serious photography actually asks of us in terms of time, attention and freedom, and what happens when those things have to compete with everything else.
