Ingebrigtsen first felt the issue in April 2025 after setting a world record mile and winning double gold at World Indoors. He bombed at 2025 Worlds in Tokyo, getting eliminated in the 1500m first round and finishing 10th in the 5000m.
What he said in his YouTube video: "My Achilles tendon is completely fine...It's the sheath around it that has been causing the issue. The sheath has been ruined and it's covered in scar tissue, which is what we have gone in and removed."
The catch as we note: Both of Ingebrigtsen's older brothers struggled with injuries after their mid-20s, with their best performances coming at ages 21-25.
At the moment, no specific return date has been set. He had planned to race at Bislett Games in June and attempt world records in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m.
If recovery goes smoothly, Ingebrigtsen could return as one of the world's best, but breaking world records would require defying historical age trends.
