Puffins in Mykines, 15/07/25

Traveling to Mykines Island takes approximately 45 minutes. To see the puffins, it is necessary to hire a local guide. If you don’t book in advance, you’ll have to buy a tour on the island, which can be much more expensive. Joining a group tour is usually more cost-effective. The reason a guide is required is because some visitors have fallen into puffin nesting holes and broken their legs — several have had to be airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. Having a guide also helps protect the puffins from harm. The guided walk typically takes about an hour and a half.
The guide will give us around 10–15 minutes to observe the puffins at the tip of the cliff, which we reach by hiking up. After that, we’ll walk back and head to the other side of the island, where we’ll see a tilted cliff formation caused by shifting land and erosion. Along the way, we’ll also encounter many more puffins during the guided walk.
