Why Norway is Becoming the World's Richest Country

Did you know Norway has a charmingly small population of only 52 million people, making it a very small country? To put this in perspective, Norway has fewer people living in it than many famous city-states around the world, like Singapore, which has 6 million people, or Hong Kong, which has almost 7.5 million. But, even though it only has a few million people, Norway covers a lot of land. With an area of about 385,000 square kilometers, it is a huge country—about 140 times bigger than Hong Kong and 464 times bigger than Singapore. But that's not the end of the similarity. Mountain ranges cover both Norway and Japan to a similar degree, making them both very large countries. Japan, on the other hand, has 22 times more people living in its mountains than Norway does. Norway has the lowest population density in mainland Europe because of this one-of-a-kind factor. It is one of the least crowded and, to be honest, emptiest countries in the world. In the farthest northern parts of Norway, past the Arctic Circle and into the Far North, where the ground is very rough, there is a thin layer of dirt. With its rough, mountainous terrain and brutal cold, this area doesn't have a long growing season that's good for supporting large populations. Only 2.2% of Norway's land is considered arable and suitable for farming. This is about the same percentage as in Yemen, which is a hilly country in the Arabian Desert that doesn't have any rivers and is often called a "failed state." Even though Norway covers 385,000 square kilometers, only 7,124 square kilometers of its land is good for farming. This shows how special Norway is in that it is both very large and very small.
