The Second World War in Europe began with the German Invasion of Poland, leading to around a month of fighting involving Nazi, Soviet, and Polish forces before the country fell on the 6th of October 1939. Many Polish soldiers would escape capture, escaping to join British and French forces in the West to continue the struggle against the Germans. Almost 60,000 Poles would fight in French service against the Blitzkrieg during the Battle of France from May-June of 1940.
