'We're ranked very badly': Trump wants to shut down DOE, says states should lead schools

The White House is reportedly drafting an executive order that would shut down the U.S. Department of Education, with President Donald Trump saying it's time to let states run their schools.

"We're ranked number 40 out of 40 schools (and) we're ranked number one in costs per pupil," Trump said during a news conference in the Oval Office Tuesday afternoon, also noting that nations such as Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and China far surpass the U.S.," Trump said. "So, we spend more per pupil than any other country in the world and we're ranked at the bottom of the list. We're ranked very badly."

Trump went on to say states including Iowa, Idaho, and Indiana, are all run properly. He said he believes they would grow even stronger without the Department of Education.
