A Russian warship armed with hypersonic cruise weapons has held exercises in the Norwegian Sea, Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday (January 10).
"The crew of the 'Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov' frigate conducted air defence exercises in the Norwegian Sea," the ministry said, also releasing footage of the drills.
Last week, President Vladimir Putin sent the frigate to the Atlantic Ocean armed with new-generation hypersonic cruise missiles, a signal to the West that Russia will not back down over what it calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.
In a video conference with the defence minister and the commander of the vessel, Putin said that he was sure that Zircon hypersonic missiles would be able to protect Russia from any external threats.
The target of a hypersonic weapon is much more difficult to calculate than for intercontinental ballistic missiles because of their manoeuvrability.
