According to a Reuters report on December 6, U.S. senators scaled back a proposal aimed at imposing new restrictions on the use of Chinese-made chips by the U.S. government and its contractors amid protests from trade groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

It is the latest example of industry efforts to undercut proposals aimed at curbing China's nascent technology sector on the grounds that such curbs would drive up costs, the report said.

Related proposals were proposed by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican China hawk John Cornyn in September, aiming to stop U.S. federal agencies and their contractors from using products made by companies such as China's SMIC semiconductor.

No longer prohibits contractors from "using" target chips, and extends the compliance period from immediate implementation or implementation within 2 years in the original version to 5 years.

According to reports, Robin Burrows, a lawyer at Borui Law Firm, said after reading part of the new draft: "This does not explicitly prohibit the contractor from using the semiconductor products involved."

SMIC's chips are commissioned by companies around the world and are found in everything from cellphones to cars."China Focus" is a YouTube channel created to provide current events and pop culture headlines from China. Here you can get to know a more real China through my video. |
