Norway controls the entire Scandinavian Arctic coastline and a number of Arctic and Antarctic islands, including the strategically located Svalbard peninsula. Part of the modern identity of Norway as an Arctic nation originates from a golden age of Arctic exploration that coincided with Norway's rebirth as a nation, fully independent from Sweden.
