Going in, there was much hype for «Masters of the Universe: Revelation», but upon release, it crashed and burned. Behind that crash, were a culmination of different factors, many of which go back decades. To fully appreciate them, we are taking a deep dive into the history of the Masters of the Universe franchise.
In part one of this series of retrospectives leading up to the Revelation Postmortem, we explored the origins of He-Man, the dubious link to Conan the Barbarian, and the creation of the Filmation series, which caused toysales to skyrocket to heights no one had imagined possible, peaking at 400 million in 1986. But from there, like Revelation would do decades later, the franchise crashed and burned, collapsing to just 7 million the very next year.
In order to understand the fall, we must first explore the rise, as that is where the seeds of destruction where planted.
In this video, we will go through how Mattel and Filmation both wanted to expand the brand with She-ra, how mistakes were made in the process, and the launch of He-man’s twin sister.
