Former senior cabinet minister S Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in prison in a high-profile criminal case that brought an end to his 27-year political career. In a surprise decision by the court, his punishment was double of what the prosecution sought. Justice Vincent Hoong said Iswaran's actions had fallen below the standards of integrity and accountability, which in turn could have a detrimental impact on how the government carries out its functions. The judge also said holders of high office have a higher impact on public interest and therefore need to conduct themselves in accordance with their status. Sabrina Ng reports.
