Norwegian police have arrested former Wagner mercenary group commander Andrey Medvedev, who had sought political asylum in Norway after deserting the Russian-backed militant group in Syria. Medvedev was arrested after he attempted to return to his native Russia illegally. Medvedev was a commander in the infamous Wagner Group – a private military organization – and had been deployed on multiple battlefields in Syria and Ukraine. He fled to Norway in 2019 claiming political asylum, only to be arrested when he attempted to cross into Russia without proper documentation. Medvedev's case is a vivid example of the consequences of desertion within the Wagner Group – a shadowy organization operating in the service of the Kremlin.
