There may be only seven weeks left for significant fighting on the front lines in Ukraine . As Politico reports, each side is making significant efforts to ensure that its actions are the last big push in the war.

US President-elect Donald Trump has promised to end the military conflict in Ukraine within a day of taking office and has appointed former National Security Advisor and retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg as special envoy for Russia and Ukraine with a mandate to negotiate a ceasefire.

Now the Defence Forces and the occupation army are straining to seize territory and gain any tactical advantage to increase their influence before the negotiations begin.

"There is a game-changing proposal coming soon in the form of Donald Trump," said James Nixey, head of the Russia-Eurasia programme at the Chatham House think tank in London.

This makes the next two months before his inauguration a potentially dangerous moment, with so much at stake for both sides.

"Everyone assumes that there will be negotiations, and both the Ukrainians and the Russians want to be in a better place. As both sides work harder, the risk of miscalculation becomes greater," said a senior Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The escalation can be seen not only on the battlefield, where Russia has deployed thousands of North Korean troops, but also in the Kremlin's threats. The aggressor country has loosened the safety catch on its nuclear weapons and attacked Ukraine with a new type of missile. Moreover, Moscow has threatened to make the American anti-missile base in Poland "a priority target for potential neutralization."

"Kyiv and Moscow have different reasons for wanting to end the war quickly. They are both racing against time not just because of Trump, but because they both have systemic, endemic problems," Nixey explained.

In his opinion, Ukraine lacks manpower and seems "on the way to losing this war." Russia, though it has found help from North Korea and China, has other serious problems - pressure on its economy, a weakening ruble and Putin's refusal to mobilize.

NATO officials believe Russia is gaining ground, but at a high cost, losing perhaps 1,500 troops a day. Meanwhile, Ukraine is holding on, albeit tightly.

"It's not easy, but it's not over. It's not a lost cause," said Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of NATO's military committee.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide predicts that the final weeks of the war could be critical, as the terms of the ceasefire could determine the lives of people in Ukraine for generations.

"These historic decisions between countries will always leave something behind," he added.

Trump’s choice of envoy is also crucial. In April, Kellogg, 80, co-authored a strategy paper calling for continued arming of Ukraine, but only if Kyiv agreed to engage in peace talks with Russia. He said the U.S. “should offer to defer Ukraine’s NATO membership for an extended period in exchange for a comprehensive peace agreement with verifiable security guarantees.” But peace talks have their pitfalls.

"There is little evidence that Putin really wants to negotiate for real. He can be patient where it is in his own interests," says one of the sources.
