The Romanian government has prepared a budget of 473 million US dollars to buy 32 units of F-16AM/BM fighter jets used by the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF).
The Romanian Ministry of Defense said that the imminent acquisition would allow the Romanian Air Force (RoAF) to retire its aging Soviet-era MiG-21 jets.
The F-16s to be purchased from Norway, said the Romanian Ministry of Defense, can still be used for at least the next 10 years.
Romania currently has 17 F-16 jets all purchased from Portugal.
Since August 2020, aircraft construction and repair company Aerostar has been a provider of maintenance and upgrade services for F-16 fighter jets in Romania.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said in February that Romania next plans to buy F-35 aircraft from Lockheed Martin as part of its air force modernization program.
