Severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and freezing rain, on January 17-18 caused chaos across Europe, impacting air and rail transport, school closures, and prompting warnings of icy roads.
Germany's National Meteorological Service warned of "partially extreme weather conditions" in central and southern regions with heavy snowfall. Approximately 700 flights were canceled at Frankfurt Airport, the country's busiest aviation hub, due to extreme weather conditions. Airport representatives stated that there was a risk of aircraft re-icing on approach to the runway.
Freezing rain in western and southern Germany led to numerous accidents on icy roads. As a precautionary measure, many schools and childcare centers are closed, and some companies offer employees the option to work from home.
Winter weather also disrupted train services. Germany's national railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, reported delays and cancellations, with the maximum speed of high-speed ICE trains reduced to 200 kilometers per hour compared to the usual 300 kilometers per hour.
In Denmark, intense snowfall and strong winds created hazardous road conditions, resulting in several road incidents. Police recommended people work from home and postpone meetings.
In Oslo, the Norwegian capital, bus routes were suspended due to poor visibility and heavy snowfall, leaving many people stranded. Poor weather also disrupted road traffic, especially in the southern part of the country, causing delays in railway services.
City airports were temporarily closed as heavy snowfall reduced visibility for pilots. "It happens extremely rarely... there is so much snow that pilots can't see the lights on the ground, so we have halted all incoming and outgoing flights," said a representative of the Norwegian national airport operator, Avinor.
Norwegian railway operator Bane Nor canceled all trains in eastern Norway. Significant delays and cancellations were reported for bus, tram, metro, and ferry services by the public transport operator Ruter.
In Sweden, at Gothenburg airport, heavy morning snowfall led to a plane skidding off the taxiway and getting stuck in the snow. Additionally, the Swedish national railway company SJ canceled many trains until early March due to heavy snowfall and unusually cold weather this winter.
In the northeastern French region of Lorraine, authorities issued an orange warning for freezing rain and snow. Numerous road incidents were reported, affecting public transportation. On Wednesday, Meteo France warned of increased snowfall and rain in most of the northeast of the country.
The southern regions of Belgium and Luxembourg were also on high alert due to freezing rain disrupting road traffic.
Extreme weather conditions follow one after another, giving people little time to recover. They bring chaos to our usual way of life, destroying our homes and cities. And increasingly, they take lives.
