Detainees freed in a prisoner swap between Russia and the West have returned home.

US citizens Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan, and Alsu Kurmasheva were each greeted by US President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris, and reunited with their families in Maryland.

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin met eight released prisoners, saying they would be given state awards.

The deal between Russia and the West has been more than 18 months in the making, and freed 24 detainees from seven countries: US, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Russia, and Belarus.
