Poland has deployed Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) along its border with Ukraine in response to Russian threats to Ukraine.
The Polish Armed Forces General Staff announced that NASAMS had been deployed near its logistics center in the city of Rzeszów, about 40 miles from Ukraine.
The country has also received several F-35 stealth fighter jets, which the General Staff said will “support the defense of Polish airspace.”
According to Norwegian defense firm Kongsberg, which manufactures the system, the land-based NASAMS is currently used by 13 countries.
Ukraine has received at least 13 NASAMS so far.
Twelve of these are from the United States and one from Canada, while four have been promised by Norway and Lithuania.
The transfer was previously announced by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense in early December, which pledged to "assume air defense responsibility, which is the most important hub for the transportation of both civilian and military supplies from other countries to Ukraine."
The ministry reported that approximately 100 Norwegian soldiers will also be stationed in Rzeszów by Easter in order to ensure the transfer of supplies to Ukraine.
Although Rzeszów is an important route for delivering aid from the West to Ukraine, Norway's support with air defense systems is also on the agenda due to concerns that Poland could soon be targeted by Russia due to its role in the conflict.
In November, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that a newly opened US air base in Redzikowo had become "one of the priority targets for potential neutralization." So is Poland ready for war with Russia?
Details in our video.
