Developments in materials science and engineering is helping us find the answers we need to achieve a more sustainable future, as well as tackling many more of today’s major challenges.

At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Department of Materials Science and Engineering Materials Science provides students with the theoretical and practical expertise that will enable them to solve these problems.

The department is the only university department in Norway offering a master's degree programme in materials science and engineering. The department's high-quality laboratories and modern and updated infrastructure are the pillars of the department's educational and research activities.

Research at NTNU includes:
• development of new materials and improvements in existing materials based on chemical, electrochemical and metallurgical expertise
• how we use and recycle materials and material resources
• reduction in energy use and emissions during production and recycling
• innovation
• extensive collaboration with other research institutions, businesses and industry

Together these projects are helping to solve regional, national and global challenges, and contributing to the development of a sustainable society for future generations.
