Norwegian Helsinki Committee calls for release of journalist Aziz Orujov

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee has expressed its opinion on the anniversary of the arrest of journalist Aziz Orujov. “Today is the sad anniversary of the arrest of journalist Aziz Orujov in Azerbaijan”, Norwegian Helsinki Committee said.

İrt is noted that political prisoner, detained exclusively for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of speech and the legal activity of a journalist with prominent Kanal13.TV. “This is not the first politically motivated persecution of Orujov. In 2017, he was sentenced to six years on other false charges, and later released on parole. His arrest a year ago signaled the escalation of repression in Azerbaijan, where since then the voices of independents have been silenced at an unprecedented rate. Since Orujov's condition has deteriorated significantly in the pretrial detention center, we are increasingly worried about his health. Many international organizations have repeatedly expressed concern about Orujov's arrest and called for his release. The authorities of Azerbaijan must listen to these appeals, promptly release him and allow him to be reunited with his family. We will not give up the unjust imprisonment against him and the journalists of Toplum TV and AbzasMedia until they are all released”, Norwegian Helsinki Committee added. Orujov’s detention came amid the arrests of anti-corruption investigative outlet Abzas Media as of December 1. Kanal 13 and Abzas Media are two of a small number of independent outlets remaining in Azerbaijan following a series of raids, arrests, and criminal investigations against independent media and press freedom groups since 2014.

Kanal 13 regularly covers sensitive topics such as demonstrations and human rights violations and gives space to opposition views.
