Norwegian Elkhound is thought to have existed as early as 5,000 BC.
In medieval days, the Elkhound was known as “Dyrehund” which translates to animal-dog.
This versatile breed has served as a guardian, hunter, sled dog, and herder throughout history.
As its name suggests, it is from Norway, and was used to hunt elk.
These courageous canines also take on bears, wolves, moose, mountain lions, and other large game.
They are thought to be a very old breed, with Viking era records of its origin.
They are Norway’s most treasured hunting dog because of their exceptional scent and smell.
