Norway which is a part of Europe Economic Area (EEA) and European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) but is not a part of EU and also doesn’t want to be
EU member states are the biggest trading partner of Norway and Norway is fifth biggest importer for EU
But Norway rejected joining EU in the 1972 referendum and in the 1994 referendum
So, both are crucial to each other but still Norway is very reluctant to join EU
Why?
According to Norwegian movement against EU, the main reason for remaining independent is:
1.Democracy. The authority of ever new areas is transferred from the nation states to the EU. The citizens of the EU are rarely aware of what is happening behind the closed doors of Brussels.
As a result, only about 45% of EU citizens vote in elections. Norway has a more effective participatory democracy as a sovereign state.
2.Solidarity: As a strong force in the World Trade Organization (WTO), the EU is pressuring poor countries into allowing multinational companies to set up shop.
Additionally, the EU enters into unequal trade deals with former colonies and has scaled back its funding to underdeveloped African nations. Poor nations are under pressure from the EU to adopt economic liberalization and privatization.
3. Freedom. After the signing of the Lisbon Treaty much of EU foreign policy decisions are made during elite political dinners in Brussels and these decisions are increasingly favouring rich countries over the poor ones.
Before membership, Sweden used to vote for the interests of the south in the UN, but as an EU member, Sweden rarely does so. As an outsider, Norway can remain an independent voice in the world.
4.Environment. The EU’s economic policies leads to centralization and large –scale production resulting in overconsumption of resources, increased transport and pollution.
5. Also Fishing is the second largest industry in Norway and the common fishing policy (CFA) will shift a part of the fishing industry under the hands of other nations in the quotas system and also the local fishing industry will lose their jobs as the big fleets are given more quotas over small ones
But still it is not as every Norwegian believes this because during both referendum polls showed slight difference between the no.s of “No” to “Yes”. Which means just less then a half people still want to join EU
We pray best happens for Norway and for EU.
