Norway has announced plans to construct a facility which will host NATO troops and provide allied nations with a base where their amphibious forces can practice beach landings in Arctic conditions.
Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram visited the northern town of Sørreisa to discuss plans for the establishment of the center, noting that it would contain housing facilities, kitchens, and operative areas which will be able to accommodate several hundred soldiers. Sørreisa is also host to an airbase and a radar station.
During the visit Minister Gram said "We must train together to be able to defend Norway, the Nordic countries and NATO in crisis and war," adding that while Norway does not have dedicated amphibious units, the facility will be used by American, British, and Dutch forces for joint military training with the support of the air force and Navy.
