Norway is investing in air fields across its Arctic region to ensure they can host allied military aircraft in the case of war with Russia. During peace time they will be used for joint exercises, but if NATO is at war, it will be used to conduct operations and raids.
The Norwegian government has taken the first step with the purchase of shares in a private airport in Bodø, Norway. A government release states that the site could potentially be used by the Norwegian military and allied forces in the future. It is also looking to upgrade and expand existing airports in three more towns across the High North.
The decision was made based on the current national security environment, according to Norway's minister of defence, Bjørn Arild Gram, who noted that Norway's security situation has drastically changed and the new infrastructure will assist allied preparedness in the Arctic.
Speaking on the matter, Gram said that "Norway will need allied help in a [potential] crisis and war. He then added that Allied and regional cooperation in NATO strengthens the country’s defense capabilities and that Bodø should be able to receive this help when it might need it."
