Spending on the Norwegian Armed Forces will nearly double, to US $36 billion by 2036, representing almost 3 per cent of Norway’s GDP.

It will include a major boost to the navy and reflects the country’s key strategic position in the face of the Russian threat and rising Chinese presence on NATO’s northern flank in the Arctic.

The naval side of the Defence boost means six new frigates and up to five new submarines along with a fleet of standardised patrol vessels.

The Royal Norwegian Navy and the coast guard forces are vital to the defence of NATO and as such frequently work alongside Alliance allies.
