The Catholic Church in the Nordic countries—Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland—has a rich history, but today it represents a small minority. In 2025, for the first time, these five nations united for a joint pilgrimage to Rome to celebrate the Jubilee Year. Pilgrims gathered for prayer, reflection, and unity as they visited the holy sites and celebrated Mass in the papal basilicas. The pilgrimage culminated in a private audience with Pope Francis, and the bishops emphasized the importance of hope and unity within the Universal Church, particularly amidst growing secularization. EWTN Vatican Journalist Benedicte Cedergren reports.
