Norway will formally recognise Palestine as a state with reports saying Spain and Ireland will soon make similar announcements. Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas GahrStøre said the move would help keep alive the only alternative to conflict in the Middle East: two states - Israel and Palestine - living side by side in peace and security. He said it would also strengthen moderate Palestinian forces who have been losing ground. European Union members Slovenia and Malta have also indicated in recent weeks that they plan to make the recognition, arguing a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.
