I will briefly explain e-gates during border control in Billund Airport (BLL), Denmark:
Traveling in or out of Schengen on busy flights, the e-gates can be used with a biometric passport by at least 18 years old citizens of: The European Union, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Personal border control is still an option and always possible for travelers who are not included among the travelers mentioned above.
