KONGSBERG’s Vanguard naval ship design

At UDT 2025 in Oslo, Norwegian company KONGSBERG was showcasing its Vanguard range of naval ships. The company is proposing Vanguard to fulfill Royal Norwegian Navy (and Coast Guard) requirement of up to 28 multi-role patrol vessels.

Since its inception in 2016, the Vanguard solution has undergone multiple development cycles, evolving into a fleet of vessels for diverse tasks. Two platform designs have been introduced: the Sheltered Water Platform (SWP) and the Blue Water Platform (BWP).

Vanguard has also been developed into a composite system of manned and unmanned capabilities, offering greater operational flexibility. Key Norwegian technologies, including autonomy, play a crucial role. The manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concept has received significant focus for experimentation and development.

The major components in the Vanguard solution consist of:
- Two baseline solutions for respectively Blue and Sheltered water operations.
- UxVs, modules and toolboxes to augment the BWP, SWP in their roles as coastguard and naval vessels, with naval warfare tasks.

Vanguard, by design, is highly adaptable and capable of fulfilling a multitude of roles. It is designed with a multi-role hangar for air, surface and sub-surface assets. Easily interchangeable mission modules and extensive use of unmanned vehicles enables quick change of operational roles. The Vanguard is also based on an open architecture to integrate and take advantage of new technology as it becomes available.
