The Government has announced that Ireland will formally recognise the state of Palestine on 28 May.

Speaking as part of a choreographed announcement along with Norway and Spain, Taoiseach Simon Harris said it had been the long-standing position of Ireland that "a two-state solution is the way to bring peace".

The Palestinian Ambassador in Dublin said the announcement " gives hope to the Palestinian people" that they are seen, they are heard and they are not alone.

It was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, the PLO - and also by Hamas who said the move had been spurred by the " brave resistance of the Palestinian people".

Israel however reacted angrily with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying it was "a prize for terrorism". Israel also recalled its ambassadors to Ireland, Spain and Norway for consultations, warning of further severe consequences.
