Norway welcomes world’s first wireless charging road for EVs

By enabling buses to run continuously throughout the day without needing to stop for charging, the wireless charging road technology has the potential to reduce carbon emissions. The pilot programmes will assess this possibility.

The Israeli hi-tech company, Electreon Wireless on Sunday inaugurated a pilot program to charge electric vehicles (EV) in motion after installing a wireless charging road in Norway. According to a report the business submitted to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange on Sunday, this will enable electric cars (EVs) to charge while driving.


Electreon's road charging systems equip specialised copper coils positioned just below the road's surface. A new 100-meter segment for this technology is being constructed in Trondheim and will be assessed for about a year.


According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, the experiments would be carried out using three electric buses made by the Chinese business Yutong and a fourth bus from another Chinese manufacturer, Higer.

Tests will also evaluate the charging system's resilience and effectiveness in the severe winter weather of Trondheim, showcasing its dependability and effectiveness in this unique northern climate.


The Norwegian government is providing money for the initiatives, which have a predicted total cost of up to 22.4 million Norwegian kroner, or 2.12 million US dollars.
