Russia was a significant supplier of fossil fuels to Europe for decades – with the first flows westward along the Druzhba or Friendship oil pipeline in 1964. Nine years later, it was complemented by a transcontinental gas pipeline. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, it was the largest exporter of oil and natural gas to the European Union.

According to the International Energy Agency, in 2021, Russia supplied 45% of the natural gas imported by European Union states.

Figures from the European Council for last year show that Russian gas made up only EIGHT percent of EU imports.
