Israel has been urging its US allies to react more forcefully to threats from the Houthi militia in Yemen to Red Sea shipping.
It comes as an anti-ship cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen struck a commercial tanker vessel on Monday causing a fire and damage but no casualties, the US military said in a statement.
The attack on the Norway-flagged tanker Strinda took place about 60 nautical miles north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden at about 9pm.
On Saturday, the Iran-aligned Houthis — who now control most of Yemen — threatened to attack any ship passing through the strategic waterway en route to Israel.
