Harald Hardrada's Incredible Legacy: The Last Great Viking King!

Welcome Back To Historical Saga,
The year 1066 is synonymous with the Norman Conquest and the violent end of Anglo-Saxon rule in England. But what’s been largely forgotten is that, just weeks before the Battle of Hastings, there was another, entirely separate, attack on England. The would-be invaders were Viking warriors headed up by Norway’s King Harald Hardrada, who would be slain at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September. His death is now regarded as marking the end of the Viking Age. Norwegian king Harald Hardrada is best known for his part in the tumultuous events in England in 1066, commanding one of the great Viking invasions and meeting his end on the battlefield at Stamford Bridge. But before all that, he led a life straight out of fantasy fiction that saw him journey to Byzantium and back. He was, writes Don Hollway, the last great Viking. During the 1030s, Harald fought throughout Europe, traveling to Constantinople, which was the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and also to Jerusalem. Quickly thought of as a renowned military leader, he became well-respected by the Byzantines. However, a breakdown in their relationship in 1042 saw Harald return to the north and is thought to have advised Yaroslav on how to exploit the weaknesses of his former allies. In this video, We are discussing Harald Hardrada's Incredible Legacy: The Last Great Viking King!
