A former Wagner group commander has fled to Norway and is seeking asylum after crossing that country’s arctic border. Andrey Medvedev reportedly crossed the border into Norway near the Pasvikdalen valley on Jan. 13 where he was detained. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration said Medvedev sought shelter in the country but “for reasons of security and privacy”. Norwegian authorities said that Medvedev was transferred to Oslo where he was placed in a centre for violators of migration laws. Medvedev’s lawyer Brynjulf Risnes said that he deserted the mercenary group after witnessing war crimes in Ukraine. Risnes added that he believed Medvedev had taken some evidence of war crimes with him to Norway.
