As you know, World War II ended in 1945 with the surrender of Germany and Japan. However, German submarines were unaware of what had happened and thus didn't know about the surrender. It is known that the last German unit to surrender was a submarine that landed in Argentina in 1945. But there was another forgotten German unit. This was in the Svalbard Archipelago, a group of islands just north of Norway, which was occupied by Nazi Germany at the time. The Germans conducted meteorological studies there. In 1944, before an attack on Belgium, a special German unit of 11 men was secretly sent to these islands to report bad weather conditions. On April 24, 1945, their mission ended, and they were told that a plane would be sent to pick them up. However, on May 2, they received news that Adolf Hitler had died, and on May 8, that the German army had surrendered. On May 24, all contact was lost, and the team was stranded on the island. On September 2, 1945, Japan also surrendered, and the war ended, but the team was still stranded on the island. Finally, the next day, they were rescued by a Norwegian ship, and the team, which had been stranded on this freezing island for nearly a year, became the last unit to surrender.
