Travel has made its post-pandemic comeback, and the cruise ship industry is along for the ride. 80% of tickets for this summer have already been gobbled up, and next summer’s market is expected to be even bigger, with two enormous cruise ships from foreign companies to make Keelung and Kaohsiung their home ports.

During around 2018 and 2019, Taiwan’s cruise ship market was developing rapidly, so we’re just jumping back on this trend despite the brief stoppage we had during the pandemic.

The Number 1 Dock at Magong Harbor is being extended to 340 meters, so in the future, big cruise ships like the 75,000-ton Norwegian Spirit will be able to dock at our outlying island of Penghu, which means we won’t need smaller vessels to ferry people over anymore.
In early May, the MSC Bellissima brought 4,000 Japanese visitors to Taiwan, and starting in January next year, this cruise ship’s home port will be Keelung, which is where the ship will begin its journeys. In the past, the Norwegian Spirit would only travel between North America and Australia, but in June, Keelung and Kaohsiung became its home ports. This cruise ship will create a new chapter for Taiwan-Japan island hopping, as passengers starting in the summer of 2024 will be able to enjoy themselves on two islands: Japan’s Ishigaki and Taiwan’s Penghu.
