Serendipity looks like this. One sunny afternoon when the winter began to fade I went down to walk along the shoreline of the fjord. I watched as this man and his grandson rowed slowly by. ‘How nice’, I thought to myself. Suddenly the boy called out to me in Norwegian. He asked me if I wanted to join them. I thought I misinterpreted his meaning somehow as I had lived in Norway long enough to know not to expect extroversion and inclusion from strangers. But I replied ‘Ja, takk’ anyway and sure enough they rowed back and pulled up onshore. And off we set, rowing without talking and me not knowing what on earth to expect.
It was delightful. We spent maybe 30 minutes together before the grandfather brought us ashore again. Me, with a full heart and a happy smile on my face.
I learned a lot from this experience, so early on in my time living in Norway. You never know what will happen next in life. As I shared yesterday, the unexpected brought awful news this Saturday, but on the occasion of this video, also taken on a Saturday, the unexpected brought me delight. Serendipity!
I don’t have anything more profound to say. Today’s Ecotherapy tip is simply to be ready for the unexpectedly good things because they happen too, often when you least expect it.
Smile to yourself
