Dramatic moment sailor is airlifted from ship moments before it sinks in South China Sea

This is the dramatic moment that a sailor is airlifted from a sinking ship into a rescue helicopter, just moments before the doomed vessel vanishes under the waves.

The video footage, shot from the helicopter, shows Hong Kong authorities carrying out the daring rescue after the engineering vessel broke up southwest of the city.

For the sailor, it was an extraordinary escape from the jaws of death - the second half of the video shows the ship he was rescued from disappearing under the water.

More than two dozen crew members are unaccounted for after the ship broke apart during a typhoon in the South China Sea on Saturday, with rescuers scrambling to find them, officials said.

An engineering vessel that was 160 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong "suffered substantial damage and broke into two pieces" and the 30-member crew abandoned ship, according to the Hong Kong Government Flying Service.

Three people were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said.
