Author Douglas Murray says when Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication in her annual New Year’s address, it caused shockwaves around the world.
The Queen of Denmark has announced she will formally step down from the throne and hand over the Danish crown to her eldest son, Prince Frederik, on January 14.
Queen Margrethe’s abdication would see Australian-born Princess Mary become Denmark’s new Queen 20 years after meeting the Prince in a Sydney bar.
“It’s being called a shrewd move to save the Danish monarchy and avert disaster after her son’s marriage has been beset by rumours of an affair,” Mr Murray said.
This comes as Guardian Columnist Simon Jenkins said in a column for The Guardian that King Charles should follow the Queen of Denmark’s example and tell people when he’ll abdicate.
