The liberation of Crimea is crucial to the entire war. Ukraine must do everything in its power to ensure that the Russian Navy and Air Force cannot operate safely on the peninsula, military analyst and former commander of the US Army in Europe Ben Hodges said in an interview for hromadske .

According to him, Russia should also lose the opportunity to use Crimea as a logistics hub.

"Most of the Russian Black Sea Fleet has already been withdrawn from Sevastopol. The Ukrainian armed forces are making sure that Russia cannot use Crimea for military purposes. The Ukrainians have also managed to destroy most of the large ferries that Russia used to deliver military equipment to Crimea. But there is still the Crimean Bridge. The Russians have done a lot to protect it. However, when the time comes, it will also be destroyed," the expert assured.

The journalist also asked Hodges whether it was possible to destroy the Crimean Bridge with Taurus and ATACMS missiles, to which he replied:

"No, this is not the kind of weapon that destroys bridges. These missiles can make a hole in the bridge. But that is not enough. There is too much steel and concrete there. So a huge amount of explosives of different types will be needed. To destroy this bridge, a well-planned operation is needed. Just one strike is not enough to deal with such a crossing. I think if anyone in the world can destroy this bridge, it is General Budanov. I am sure that there are people in the GUR who are working on a plan to destroy the Crimean Bridge."

The military analyst was also asked when Ukraine would start using F-16 fighters to counter Russian aircraft that are bombing frontline cities with KABs. He noted that these fighters are not a magic weapon that will change the course of the war.

"Ukraine doesn't have that many pilots. You can't risk them. I know for a fact that Ukraine will have the best F-16 fleet on the planet because the Ukrainians are very fast at learning how to use new technology. The Ukrainians are doing things that no other air force could do. Ultimately, air strikes are going to be needed to isolate Crimea and prevent the Russians from using the peninsula to wage war against Ukraine," Hodges said.

He said that Russian Armed Forces have been conducting offensive operations on several sections of the front for over a year now . However, the occupiers' advance can hardly be called successful.

"From Avdiivka to Pokrovsk is 63 kilometers. In a year, the Russians were unable to advance 60 kilometers into Ukrainian territory, despite heavy losses. Tens of thousands of their soldiers died in these battles. This can hardly be called a successful offensive operation," he said.

Hodges noted that the main thing in war is not stopping the enemy's advance at any cost. He believes that people need to be patient and look at the facts.
