Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Wednesday that she believes Canada’s message to the Trump administration is “resonating” following her meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C.

Joly said she had a “positive” meeting with Rubio, after the pair sat down to discuss President Donald Trump’s threat of a sweeping 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods but did not say whether she had received confirmation that tariffs would be imposed on Feb. 1 as Trump has previously stated.

Joly said she had presented Rubio with the details of Canada’s plan to tackle illegal immigration and fentanyl at the border, and stressed the importance of the Canada-U.S. trade relationship.

“The secretary of state understands the relationship between trade and geopolitics. And, it is important that we work together and we not be divided in a world where there’s so much geopolitical competition, particularly when it comes to China.”

Joly said she will remain in Washington, D.C. to continue to make Canada’s case until Friday.
