Alleged Russian spy ‘Whaledimir’ turns up again in Scandinavia

They call him Hvaldimir – or ‘Whaledimir’ – because it’s alleged that he’s a Russian spy. Strange, perhaps, given he’s a beluga whale – but he first came to attention in 2019 because he was wearing a Russian camera harness saying “Equipment St Petersburg” while slowly traversing the waters around Norway.

Sounds daft, but that was enough for the Norwegian intelligence authorities to launch an investigation…. And now he’s turned up in Sweden. Is he on the run? Do beluga whales even run? Maybe we’ll never know… because Hvaldimir isn’t speaking…
