A rocket from German startup Isar Aerospace fell and then exploded soon after launch — causing a gigantic fireball against a stunning, icy backdrop.

The Spectrum rocket, launched over the weekend from a Norwegian spaceport, was meant to kick off Europe’s efforts to keep up with stiff competition in launching satellites into orbit. It was the first such rocket to be launched from continental Europe, Russia excluded.
