Minnesota is full of dams that are past their expiration date. Many have structural issues, no longer produce electricity or control floods, and are full of debris and sediment. One of them was the Rapidan Dam near Mankato, which partially failed in June.

One solution: Rock rapids. Pine River is one of about 75 places around Minnesota where rock rapids have replaced dams. The rock rapids there were completed in 2022, replacing a 1910 gated dam that had held back the waters of Norway Lake in downtown Pine River. #riverrapids #pinerivermn #damfailure
