???? An international team of ocean scientists led by UiT The Arctic University of Norway have just found a new mud volcano deep in Norwegian arctic waters!
???? Using ROV Aurora, aboard RV Kronprins Haakon, the AKMA, REV Ocean and Ocean Census researchers descended to 400 meters in the #Barents Sea and witnessed the dramatic new mud volcano, now named #Borealis.
The site was likely caused by a catastrophic blowout of methane approximately 18,000 yrs ago, and it is only the 2nd mud volcano ever found in Norway.
???? There is a vibrant community of seabed life in this unique habitat, including sea #anemones, #sponges, carnivorous sponges, sea stars, #corals, sea spiders and #crustaceans.
This new find also helps researchers advance knowledge of the global #methane budget and its impacts on Earth's ecosystems.
