Fimmvörðuháls trail from Skogafoss- Hiking the most beautiful trail in Iceland half way

3 months ago 27

The Fimmvörðuháls (five-cairn trail) route is one of the most popular hikes in Iceland. It is located in southern Iceland in the area between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers.

You can hike this trail in one day all the way from Skogafalls to Thorsmork. The first part of the pass is along the Skógá river. It is filled with a huge amount of beautiful waterfalls running through it. The famous Skógafoss waterfall runs from this river as well. After departing from the river, you will enter a more desolated area leading you to the pass between the two glaciers - Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

If you would like to do an easy day hike that is only 4 miles long, you can do what we did and hike until the bridge that crosses the Skoga River and then turn around. It only takes about 2-3 hours and you get to see the most beautiful waterfalls of the entire hike.

This is a hidden gem in Iceland as only a few people hike up to the pass. Most people just visit Skogafoss and then head on to the rest of Iceland
